# Rethink Aadhaar

> Rethink Aadhaar is a non-partisan campaign concerned about India's Unique Identification (UID) or Aadhaar project — its design, its expansion across welfare and finance, and the documented harms (welfare exclusion, surveillance risk, biometric failures).

## Scope
- **Country**: India (en-IN). All evidence and testimony is from Indian residents and Indian welfare programmes.
- **Issuing authority of Aadhaar**: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a statutory body of the Government of India.
- **Position**: critical of coercive Aadhaar mandates; the campaign documents harm and supports voluntariness, opt-out, and de-linking. It is not anti-welfare; it argues Aadhaar mandates *worsen* welfare access for the poorest.

## Myths about Aadhaar
- Aadhaar is identity for those who lack an identity. — Fact: To get Aadhaar, you need a Proof of Identity and a Proof of Address.
- Aadhaar is a voluntary ID scheme. No services are linked to Aadhaar per se. — Fact: Aadhaar was sold to the public on the claim that enrolment was 'voluntary' — but in practice it has become mandatory.
- Aadhaar is based fully on consent. — Fact: You may have to compulsorily enrol under Aadhaar, despite your privacy concerns.
- Aadhaar law has privacy protections comparable to the best in the world. — Fact: The Aadhaar Act allows authorities to share your personal data in the 'interest of national security' — a term that is left undefined.
- Aadhaar is meant only to target subsidies. — Fact: Aadhaar was opened up for use by private companies — airlines, telecom, insurance, real estate — well beyond welfare delivery.

## FAQs
- **Why should you care about privacy when you have nothing to hide?** — Privacy matters regardless of lawful behaviour.
- **Does welfare actually need Aadhaar?** — Welfare needs Aadhaar like a fish needs a bicycle.
- **Has anyone actually died because of Aadhaar?** — Yes. Aadhaar‑linked exclusion from the Public Distribution System has been documented as a cause in starvation deaths since 2017.
- **Isn't Aadhaar just like the US Social Security Number?** — Aadhaar is not comparable to the SSN. They are very different things.
- **Didn't the Supreme Court already settle the Aadhaar question?** — No. The 2018 Puttaswamy judgment placed real limits on Aadhaar that have been quietly eroded ever since.
- **What is India Stack?** — India Stack is Aadhaar plus the rails built on top of it. We view it as a failed and objectionable model that should not be replicated abroad.
- **Can I just opt out of Aadhaar?** — Not cleanly. There is no working mechanism to delete an Aadhaar number, but there is plenty you can do, individually and collectively.
