Big Brother Relies On Big Data

Rethink Aadhaar Newsletter | July - August 2026

The nation-wide students’ protests revived and strengthened the demand for accountability from public authorities, and at the same time brought us face to face with a gamut of surveillance technologies which threaten our most cherished freedoms.

In August, we at Rethink Aadhaar co-hosted a webinar along with the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) and National Alliance for Justice, Accountability and Rights (NAJAR) to discuss the architecture of surveillance technologies and databases used by the State, in the context of the recent student protests across the country.

The webinar brought to light the rapidly increasing surveillance systems (real time facial recognition, enhanced glasses, CCTV footage etc.) collecting data about people in India; the lack of easy remedies once you’re caught in a surveillance database; the absence of any legal framework governing most of these systems; and how they effectively shut down protest and dissent. You can watch the discussion here.
